CHIRI People – Rob Steuart

Steuart, Rob3Dr Rob Steuart, CHIRI’s Facility has been invited to be part of a delegation of researchers from the soon to be formed Australian Metabolomic Phenotyping Centre at Murdoch University.  They will travel to Imperial College in London next week to visit the National Phenome Centre.

The National Phenome Centre is the world leader in large scale phenotyping studies and is supported by the Medical Research Council and National Institute for Health Research. The National Phenome Centre is one of the founders of the International Phenome Centre Network, which the Australian Metabolomic Phenotyping Centre will be a member of. 

Upon returning from the UK, Rob has been invited to speak at and chair the 2017 Research Facility Design and Construction Conference in Sydney Australia.  This is the second time that Rob has been asked to speak at and chair this annual conference, which brings together research facility managers, university properties staff, architects, laboratory designers and consultants to talk about issues and solutions in research facility management and design.

CHIRI Microscopy

Ultraview confocal microscope: the facility has recently upgraded the 405nm and 561nm lasers. With installation all lasers were optimised and this has greatly improved the instrument capabilities. Please note previous laser power settings may need to be adjusted for the system. If you have any questions or need help with setup with the new lasers please feel free to contact Connie Jackaman.

If you would also like to submit an image for this round, please send through by COB Friday 31st March  to Connie Jackaman or can drop by the office (305.106) with it on USB and include a sentence or two lay description. Any type of techniques or images generated in the facility are welcome!

2017-02-24 09.19.41Please welcome Dr Matthew Albrecht, an NHMRC Early Career Research Fellow who extends CHIRI’s expertise in preclinical and clinical neurological disorders theme. Matthew graduated from his PhD (Pharmacology, UWA) in 2012 studying the effects of dexamphetamine on electrophysiology, phenomenology, and behaviour associated with schizophrenia in human subjects.  Read more…

CHIRI/Sarich – new appointments

Julian Heng Melinda Fitzgerald

Please welcome two recent outstanding research appointments, Professor Melinda (Lindy) Fitzgerald and Associate Professor Julian Heng. Lindy and Julian will be physically located at the Sarich Neuroscience Research Institute, but are fully affiliated with the Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute (CHIRI).

Lindy and Julian add significant capacity to the Neurological research pillar within CHIRI and our ViNC themes.  They are keen to engage with the CHIRI research community through collaborative research, student supervision, involvement in research symposia and provision of guest lectures. They will both present their research through the CHIRI seminar series in the near future, but a short biography describing their research can be found by selecting ‘read more’ below. CHIRI People – Dr Sheena Regan

We would like to congratulate Dr Sheena Regan, co-supervised by Prof Arunasalam Dharmarajan, who has been awarded a “Society for Reproductive Biology Early Career Researcher Collaborative Research Travel Award”.  The ECR Collaborative Research Grants are a new initiative from the SRB.  These awards will fund the travel of an ECR to the institution of another ECR for the purpose of planning joint research and/or the conduct of preliminary experiments or to allow the training of an Early Career Researcher by another (for example in a technique).

The award is a prestigous and coveted award recognising exceptional talent.

CHIRI Image of the Year Winner

Congratulations to Miheer Sabale for winning Image of the Year!  The Nikon camera award was presented at the CHIRI Focus on Microscopy Workshop.  A big thanks to everyone who helped judge images throughout the year and for Coherent Scientific/Nikon for sponsoring!

Also, thanks to everyone for their submissions, participation and engagement throughout the year. All entries were well received and it was great to see the many different techniques/instruments highlighted in the images. Coherent/Nikon are more than happy to continue to support and we will be back next year!
