Please congratulate Deirdre Coombe & Pritinder Coombe who, on behalf of CHIRI, co-hosted UWA’s Centre for Cell Therapy & Regenerative Medicine’s 5th Annual Research Symposium. Approximately 65 attendees were hosted to a series of outstanding national and international presentations. In addition to the exceptional presentations, feedback from the postgraduates in attendance indicated they were very interested to hear about the research strategies adopted by leading researchers in the field.
CHIRI Cancer Workshop
Post Science on Swan, CHIRI hosted a Cancer Workshop which was kindly organised by Delia Nelson, Pritinder Kaur, Nina Tirnitz-Parker, Connie Jackaman, Carl Mousley, Pat Metharom, Deirdre Coombe and Yu Yu. The meeting had the opportunity to host 5 International/national speakers, as well as featuring CHIRI researchers and PhD students. Attendance was once again strong, with 65 registrants and substantial interactive discussions took place. A small number of outstanding student oral presentations were given. Best student presentation award was to Abhijeet Deshmukh for his talk titled “Epigenetic silencing of secreted frizzled-related protein genes in cancer stem cells from hormone related tumour cells.”
2017 Science on the Swan Conference
The Faculty of Health Sciences and CHIRI were pleased to sponsor the Science on the Swan Conference, Perth’s premier conference for health and medical research and to also support attendance of postgraduate students via complimentary registration. More than half of the submitted abstracts presented at Science on the Swan were from CHIRI postgraduate students. Moreover, two CHIRI postgraduate abstract submissions were awarded ‘Best Poster Prize’ presentation. Congratulations to both students:
Benjamin Bartlett (co-authors Imran Khan, Clinton Matthyson, Omar Elaskalani, Ralph Martins, Giuseppe Verdile and Pat Metharom) for the presentation titled “Oligomeric amyloid-beta induces platelet aggregation” and;
Jordan Rowlands (co-authors Rodrigo Carlessi and Philip Newsholme) for the presentation titled “The role of glucagon-like peptide-1 and associated signal transduction in the regulation of pancreatic beta cell metabolism”.

2nd Annual Day of Immunology hosted by CHIRI
CHIRI hosted two events in as many days for the Annual Day of Immunology. Close to 40 staff and students competed in the 2nd annual Day of Immunology 5-a-side soccer tournament organised by PhD student, Waheed Alrehaily, on 27th April. A number of other staff and students also came to support the “immune cells” in their fight for the ASI cup. Read more…

CHIRI Seminar Series – 6/4/2017 – Building 405.201:LT
The next seminar in the CHIRI Seminar series is Thursday, 6th April at 1.00pm, presented by A/Prof Julian Heng from the Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute. The title of is talk is “Interpreting the architecture of genetic mutations in brain developmental disorders and early onset neurodegeneration”.
