Before the weekend’s royal wedding, there were the CHIRI weddings. Not a white coat in sight, as four of our researchers stepped out of the lab and into a life of wedded bliss. Researchers spend their lives discovering things so no surprise that two of our researchers discovered love with each other! I’m sure you’ll agree that all of our brides and grooms looked nothing short of regal on their special days. To all our newlyweds, thank you for sharing your stories with us. Congratulations from all your friends and colleagues at CHIRI. If you have a story to share, please let us know here.
Nina & Ian
“We are all a little weird and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love.” – Dr Seuss
Dr Nina Tirnitz-Parker and her partner of eight years Ian took inspiration for their nuptials from Dr Seuss! The above quote was chosen as a reading during the ceremony. The quirky couple was married on 6 October 2017 at Fremantle’s Bathers Beach, followed by a reception at Kidogo Art House. Nina’s favourite moments were holding hands after the ‘I dos’ and turning to see guests from near and far there to share the special moment. Despite having the same circle of friends for more than a decade the pair had never crossed paths. They were set up by a mutual friend who decided they were a perfect match. The walk down the aisle and beach featured bagpipes played by CHIRI’s Dr Ross Graham. Adding to the ‘Freo festival’ vibe was a vintage kombi and high tea caravan, live music, Moroccan food and fire twirlers! Nina says the day was ‘a blast’ – just like her it was colourful and quirky with lots of good laughs and fun.
Carl & Danielle
Dr Carl Mousley and Dr Danielle Dye met at CHIRI where they both still work. With some gentle encouragement from their CHIRI friends, the couple discovered that their mutual loves included not only research but each other. After getting engaged on their second year anniversary dinner, the couple tied the knot a year and a half later on 6 April 2018 at the Fremantle Sailing Club. Danielle told us the best moments on the day were reciting their vows, the speeches and the very full dance floor. That last part is not surprising given that 102 family members and friends, including some from the UK, USA, South Australia and Victoria, attended to celebrate and wish the couple well.
Kevin & Leigh
Dr Kevin Keane had the luck of the Irish on his side when he married Leigh on 24 March. The couple met at work and were together for three and a half years before Kevin sank to one knee and proposed at the Kings Park War Memorial in Perth. The wedding was in Navan, County Meath in Ireland on 24 March 2018, where the occasion was celebrated in true Irish style. We’re talking ballads and sing-alongs until the sun came up! About 100 family and friends attended, including 30 who made the trip from Perth, Melbourne, Denmark and Wales.
