AJA donates original Curtin document

By Curtin Library 1 May 2012 Library Services JCPML Comments off

The WA Journalists Association has donated an original document from John Curtin to Curtin University Library.

The document is his application to join the journalists union, the Australian Journalists Association (AJA), dated 22 February 1917. Curtin applied for membership just five days after arriving in Perth to take up the editorship of the Labor weekly newspaper, the Westralian Worker. The printed and handwritten document is on thin, pink paper and measures 13 cm by 20 cm, probably reflecting World War One paper shortages.

John Curtin proudly wore his AJA membership badge on his suit lapel for the rest of his life and when he died in office as prime minister he was still a financial member of the association.
