Note to staff

John Curtin Distinguished Professors

Last week the University recognised four of our outstanding academics with the title of John Curtin Distinguished Professor.

The title is the highest honour that Curtin awards its academic staff in recognition of their expert skills, a significant record of public service and an established national or international reputation.

Congratulations to Professor Kliti Grice, Professor Yong Hong Wu and Professor Tony Lucey from the Faculty of Science and Engineering and Professor Martin Hagger from the Faculty of Health Sciences on this honour.

They join 23 other exceptional staff members who have been awarded the title since 2005 and I look forward to working with each of them in the future.

International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day has celebrated the economic, political and social achievements of women for more than 100 years and I was delighted to have the opportunity to speak at Curtin’s International Women’s Day breakfast on Friday.

The event at Curtin Stadium attracted a large group of staff, and included an inspiring speech by Aboriginal rights activist and prominent lawyer Kate George. My thanks also go to Professor Graeme Wright, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Development for his personal insights and for acting as MC for the event.

I am delighted to learn that Curtin’s Equal Employment Opportunity Management Plan has been acknowledged by the Office of Equal Opportunity (Western Australia) as best practice, and the University was awarded the Employer of Choice for Women citation in 2002 and has received it every year since.

Other achievements in this area include the Advancing Women Strategy and the Women’s Executive Development Program, both of which aim to improve the representation of women in senior roles and to address barriers to entry into employment and higher degrees.

I encourage you to celebrate the achievements women have made and reflect on the issues that still require action.

Vice-Chancellor’s Investiture

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended my Investiture on the 24th February. I was delighted that so many of you could share this special occasion with me.

I am aware that a number of staff have requested a copy of my speech, so this along with the video of the ceremony and a selection of photos can be viewed here.
