Attacks on Indian Students in Melbourne and Sydney

The recent attacks on Indian students in Melbourne and Sydney have shocked and concerned many in the Australian community. While there have been no similar incidents in Perth, such violence would be particularly worrying for our international students and staff as well. I would like to assure you that Curtin is committed to ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all our students and staff.

Discrimination against any cultural group is of particular concern to Curtin as we have the highest number of international students in Western Australian and the third highest in Australia. We proudly offer a multi-cultural campus to all our students and strongly believe in the benefits of studying in this richly diverse environment.

Racial discrimination is not tolerated by the University and any reported incidents would be investigated as a matter of priority. Any concerns in this regard should be reported to Curtin Security on 9266 4444.

The University has invested about $4 million since 2006 to upgrade security on the Bentley Campus and we are working closely with the WA Police, TransPerth and the local Councils to maximise safety. This has resulted in increased Police patrols and also a greater Police presence on and around the Campus.

Curtin Security also has a number of initiatives in place including 24 hour a day, 7 days a week patrols and the operation of a Campus Courtesy Bus which is readily available to take students and staff to their vehicles or the bus terminal. A Safer Pathways route is also available that is patrolled by Security and has increased lighting.

All these actions have resulted in a reduction of crime on the Bentley Campus since the start of 2009.

Curtin is committed to the wellbeing of all of its students and staff. Please remember that the University Counselling Services (on 9266 7850) or the Multi-faith Service (on 9266 2906) are available for additional support at any time.
