Library help during Orientation Week

Whether you’re a seasoned uni student or in your first year, it’s always good to pick up some extra study skills before semester starts.

Check out our huge range of online workshops during orientation week that will help you excel in your studies, bed down your basics and stretch your mind, or come chat to us in the Library, at O-Day or at our activities on campus!

Monday 22 February
The Library: What you need to know Discover the Library’s wide range of services and learn how to access Library resources. An opportunity to ask questions to get you started on your university journey.
Microsoft Word and PowerPoint essentials Get practical tips on how to effectively use Word and PowerPoint. Find out how to set up documents, how to add text, images and links, and learn how to format your assignments to look the best they can!
Gathering information for your first assignment Go beyond Google! Find out about the Library’s catalogue and databases. Get started with creating a targeted and effective search strategy. Learn about key terms, helpful guides and more so you can get a head start.
Tuesday 23 February
Origami session Join us for an hour of folding, experimenting, and conversing! The session will offer guidance on how to fold classic origami designs, but more expert folders are welcome to join and work on their own projects – and maybe inspire us!

Microsoft Excel essentials workshop Learn handy formatting tips for your Excel spreadsheets. Find out about AutoFill, Flash Fill, splitting, sorting and filtering columns, and discover how to use formulas and simple functions.
Mature age and part time student orientation Learn practical tips on how to successfully transition into study. Discover a range of support services and connect with other mature age and part time students.
Referencing the right way Learn the fundamentals of paraphrasing and summarising – essential skills for a university student! Strengthen your academic writing by incorporating evidence-based facts and get tips on how to maximise your referencing accuracy.
Wednesday 24 February
O-Day stall Visit our UniPASS, Library and Makerspace staff at our O-Day stall. Ask for advice about using the Library and studying better and grab some freebies!If you can’t make it to campus for O-Day, we’ll also take part in the Virtual Guild O-Day on Tuesday 9 March. Check the Guild’s website for more information.

Develop your digital and creative skills Creativity is about using our imaginations to create something new by combining things in original ways. This workshop will introduce you to some ideas, examples and tools to develop your creativity.
Thursday 25 February
Improve your numeracy skills Refresh your knowledge of foundational maths skills, such as the order of operations (BIMDAS), rounding decimal numbers accurately and how to work with percentages and fractions.
Gathering information for your first assignment Go beyond Google! Find out about the Library’s catalogue and databases. Get started with creating a targeted and effective search strategy. Learn about key terms, helpful guides and more so you can get a head start.
Time management Learn time management techniques to better utilise your time. Get tips on how to balance your studies with other commitments and discover available resources to help you plan your time and create productive study habits.
Critical thinking Gain the skills to look at issues or topics in an objective and critical way. Understand how arguments are formed and judge their rationality, and learn how to identify and avoid fake news.
Friday 26 February

Makerspace open during Orientation Week The Makerspace is open 12pm – 5pm during orientation week. Check out our new space in the architecture building, meet our staff and make something cool!
Makerspace campus activities Come to the Creative Quarter to create and de-stress!
Monday 10am – 2pm Badge and magnet making
Tuesday 10am – 2pm Memory box decorating
Thursday 10am- 2pm Photo frame making
Friday 10am – 2pm All of the above!

    I have only just learnt of these workshops, but all have finished. Is there another way to access them, as I would benefit from many of the options as I haven’t studied for many years and never online.

    Hi I only just saw this today so I have missed out on the work shop. I’m a first time uni student. I would like to do the Mature age and part time student orientation please or any kind of help and guidance would be greatly appreciated.
