HANDSOME DOGS

A play by John Freeman

Handsome Dogs poster

Handsome Dogs promises to be something of an event: played outdoors in the dying light of a west coast sunset … with a little music, a bit of disguise and a glass or two of wine … for those who catch our barman’s eye. There’ll also be plenty of theatre. And what is theatre, if not a palace of bliss for the souls of the dead, a permanent present, crowded with ghosts of the past?

The ghosts of this performance’s past cast large shadows: the ghost of Euripides teaches lessons about war, Brecht’s ghost takes us down avenues of truth. In this company, Handsome Dogs wallows in the moral low ground. Where ancient Greek theatre had its amphitheatre of choral song, we have a scaled down version housing women in wigs, moustachioed men in flared trousers and an ad-hoc band of musos doing their best impression of a half-drunk house band in a roadside bar.
