Over 130 very keen attendees came together at the Curtin University Tim Winton Lecture Theatre on Thursday the 1st of August for the screening of the documentary Dear Mandela.

Dr Lynda Blanchard from the Centre for Human Rights Education introduced Gerard Gill and highlighted the anniversary and work of the Centre for Human Rights Education. Gerard then gave a brief background to the documentary before the screening and mentioned his work in South Africa with the activist group that the movie is about, Abahlali baseMjondolo (Zulu for ‘people of the shacks’), that is going towards his PhD research.

The movie was a moving account of the group’s struggle for recognition of their cause in the constitutional court of South Africa. They are inhabitants of shanty towns in Durban, South Africa.

After watching the film, a Youtube clip of the director of the film, Dara Kell, and the leader of the activist group being interviewed by Al Jazeera was shown. The film maker and activist spoke about their experiences of making the film and what has happened since it was filmed in 2009. We highly recommend a viewing of this film if you get a chance.

Thank you to Gerard for organising the screening in collaboration with the Centre.
